Natural Bodybuilding Potential 1/12/2009Natural Bodybuilding Potential 1/12/2009 If you read most muscle magazines you would think gaining muscle was easy; especially when you read articles such as: “put on 10 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks!” or “gain an inch on your arm in 30 days”. As a young bodybuilder I would try out these workouts and always come away disappointed. The other thing is you see pro bodybuilders in the magazines all claiming 20+ inch arms regardless of there height and weight and you think man if I take such and such a supplement or train like him I can get arms just like that. Well unfortunately it usually doesn’t eventuate (unless you are a genetic super freak!) Plus think about it- they must be lying- if you think Ronnie Coleman in the off-season weighs in at around 130-140 kilos and has just over 23 inch arms how can the smaller pros weighing around 90 kilos in contest shape have any where near 20+ inches (they probably don’t it just looks like it). In reality putting on muscle or wondering what measurements your arms can attain for drug free athletes requires that you disregard most of the hype from the media surrounding bodybuilding and find out what is truly possible in the realms of natural bodybuilding. There are a few readings that pertain specifically to this very thing. Steeve Reeves, a bodybuilding icon before drugs became widespread, presented a simple formula for calculating the ideal muscular body weight (meaning in good shape) for your height. He suggested this: Height Weight (pd) Weight (kg) 5’5” 160 72.7 5’6” 165 75 5’7” 170 77.2 5’8” 175 79.5 5’9” 180 81.8 5’10” 185 84 5’11” 190 86.3 6’0” 200 90 6’1” 210 95.4 6’2” 220 100 Another expert in the natural bodybuilding field, Stuart Mc Roberts, devised a similar system that tried to consider different bone structures. Just recently I read an article by Casey Butt, PhD, who discusses another formula based on height, ankle and wrist size which correlates nicely with the weights and body measurements of elite natural bodybuilders in lean condition. Check it out for yourself on: www.weightrainer.net. For my height, ankle size (8.5 in) and wrist size (6.5 in) it suggested these measurements to aim for @ 8-10%: Weight: 162pds 73.6 kg Measurements: Chest 44.2 Arms 15.9 Thighs 23.5 Calves 15.8 Forearms 12.7 These are great goals for me to aim for as a natural bodybuilder and far more attainable than weights and measurements of the guys in the magazines (most pro-bodybuilders my height weigh around 90+ kilos ripped with 20 inch arms supposedly!). Although this formula may not be 100% accurate it definitely gives you a far more realistic expectation of your natural bodybuilding potential. So check out the website, set some goals, train hard, eat balanced muscle building meals, take growth and recovery promoting natural supplements, sleep well and reach your natural bodybuilding potential! |
